Ridiculous: Glenvale mum spends 40 minutes in the car to drive her son just 1km to school

Twice a day, Glenvale State School mum Jess Errington spends up to 40 minutes in the car to drive just 1km from her home to the school gates.

Twice a day, Glenvale State School mum Jess Errington spends up to 40 minutes in the car to drive just 1km from her home to the school gates.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki said traffic congestion on Glenvale Road during school pick-up and drop-off times had peaked at chaos levels.

Hundreds of parents spend up to 40 minutes driving laps back and forth past the school which has only one entrance, an insufficient drop-off zone and just 50 car parks.

Mrs Errington said she would much rather walk to school with her two children Saxon, 7, and Everley, 3, but it was too dangerous.

“I can’t even walk to school with my kids because there are no (connecting) footpaths and the children have to walk on the busy road,” she said.

“Council rarely mows along Boundary Road and we have encountered snakes too.”

Mr Janetzki said the congestion would only get worse as council have approved a new 140-lot housing development which completely wraps around the school’s boundary.

“There is great urgency in our push to secure extra car parking for school parents to ensure their childrens’ safety,” he said.

“Once this housing development is complete, it will add another few hundred cars onto these roads.”

Mrs Errington said parents often sat idling for up to 10 minutes at the Glenvale Road/McDougall Street roundabout as traffic would bank up for more than 2kms.

“With only once entrance to the school, it is the worst school in Toowoomba for pick-up and drop-offs,” she said.

Mr Janetzki said his office would continue speaking to the department as a matter of urgency.
