Toowoomba drivers urged to slow down as students go back to school

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP said motorists needed to take extra care in school zones because children were often unpredictable.

“If a motorist sped through a 200 metre school zone at 60km/h they would only save six seconds on their journey,” Mr Janetzki said.

“However, the difference between a collision at 40km/h and a collision at 60km/h could be the difference between life and death for a child – it’s just not worth it,” he said.

Mr Janetzki said he would be pushing for the installation of flashing school zone lights on Burton Street in Harristown where a lollipop man was hit by a four-wheel-drive that ploughed through the crossing last year.

“We need to improve safety for students but also for our lollipop ladies and men who have been shaken by multiple near-misses on the busy road,” he said.

Extra police will be enforcing speed limits and road rules in school zones across the state as school returns.

Mr Janetzki also encouraged parents and carers to speak to their children about basic road safety such as when and where to cross the road.

“Reduced speed limits and flashing school zone lights are integral to road safety in school zones,” he said.
