Toowoomba fitness guru Steve Roberts is pushing for the installation of adult exercise equipment in more parks.
Mr Roberts has been an exercise physiologist for almost 20 years and noticed a stark difference in the free exercise equipment available to residents when he moved from Brisbane to Toowoomba in 2017.
“It would be great to have more exercise equipment in Toowoomba parks that is robust enough for adults to train on,” Mr Roberts said.
Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP has written to Toowoomba Regional Council on behalf of Mr Roberts and applauded the idea.
“Installing exercise equipment in Middle Ridge Park and Horn Park is an excellent idea,” Mr Janetzki said.
“Statistics show that more than 6,200 people in Toowoomba (5.4%) live with diabetes,” he said.
“This would be an excellent way to provide residents with access to quality equipment without the cost of gym memberships.”
Mr Roberts said the installation of equipment could make exercise more of a family affair.
“I have a wife and son so I know that it’s like – some people don’t want to spend their precious time away from their families in a gym,” Mr Roberts said.
“People could use the equipment while their kids played at the park,” he said.
Mr Roberts has started hosting a free group exercise class in Horn Park at 6am each Wednesday.
Councillors said they would be happy to meet with Roberts to further discuss his idea.
