Mums worried school parking is tragedy waiting to happen

Mother-of-four Melissa Greensill is petitioning the State Government to address the car parking chaos at Glenvale State School before a child is seriously injured or killed.

Mrs Greensill has collected about 400 signatures, with the help of other school mums, on the petition which calls for more car parks to be built along busy Glenvale Rd.

There is only one entrance to the school and no connecting footpaths for children to safely walk to school.

Each morning and afternoon, a few hundred parents jostle for the limited street parking and often end up parking across residents' driveways, lawns and in no-standing zones.

"It is only a matter of time before something happens and that makes me feel sick," she said.

"Sometimes tragedies have to happen before action is taken and I don't want to wait until that happens."

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP will present the petition to the Minister for Education for urgent attention.

"There are 2200 vehicle movements along Glenvale Rd per day with about 10% of those being trucks," he said.

"Glenvale has witnessed extraordinary growth over the last 20 years with the school population doubling to almost 800 and subdivisions popping up throughout the area.

"Despite this, no substantive changes to school parking arrangements have been made."

Mr Janetzki said pressure on Glenvale Rd would continue to grow as the RASQ was seeking to expand and run major events at the Toowoomba Showgrounds throughout the year.

"I have the support of the Toowoomba Regional Council and now I call on the state government to deliver this project," he said.

"There are parking development options across the road and further down Glenvale Rd."

Mrs Greensill said the Glenvale State School principal and staff were committed to ensuring the safety of their students.
