Toowoomba teenager chosen to voice youth issues in Parliament

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP congratulates teenager Chloe Ainscow on her appointment as the Queensland Youth Parliament representative for Toowoomba South.

Teenager Chloe Ainscow is enjoying dipping her toes in the political waters after she was selected to represent Toowoomba South in the Queensland Youth Parliament.

Miss Ainscow, 16, is in Year 12 at Fairholme College and currently writing a Disaster Relief Bill as part of her work on the Community and Social Services committee.

“I love the atmosphere of politics and have always been interested in it,” Miss Ainscow said.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP congratulated Miss Ainscow and praised her enthusiasm.

“It is great to see so many young people like Chloe who are willing to put their time and effort into learning about the institutions that make our state great,” Mr Janetzki said.

“Youth Members are bridging the gap between legislators and young people in Queensland,” he said.

“Chloe is the voice of young people in Toowoomba South and we need more people just like her getting involved in politics.”

In April each year the program brings participants together in Brisbane to form committees and discuss ideas.

Youth Members have weekly phone and video conferences with each other while they write and make amendments to their Bills. They return to Brisbane in September for a residential program where they will debate their Bills at Parliament House.

Miss Ainscow is planning to study social science and arts next year at the University of Queensland. She aspires to be involved in local and state politics in the future.

“It is such a great program. It has been interesting to learn how a Bill is formed and how it then becomes legislation,” she said.
